How to Choose a Portable Tyre Inflator

By AutoXpert UK · Practical buying guidance

A portable inflator can be useful for routine pressure checks at home. Choose it for your car and the place you will use it, rather than relying on the largest pressure number in the listing.

Decide how you will power it

Compare a plug-in inflator with a rechargeable model. For a plug-in unit, check the required supply against your vehicle handbook and the device instructions. For a battery model, check how it recharges and what the seller says about the battery and operating limits. Keep the correct charging lead with it.

Check that the cable and hose will reach

Look at the combined arrangement of the power lead, hose and valve connector. Consider where the power socket is and whether you can place the unit securely beside every wheel. A short lead may be awkward even on a small car if the socket is in the wrong place.

Read the pressure and operating instructions

Check the units on the display, the working pressure range, any preset or stop function and the continuous operating time. Do not assume automatic shut-off removes the need to follow the instructions and check the result. Compare an inflator's intended use with your vehicle and tyre requirements.

Use the vehicle's recommended pressure

Michelin advises checking pressures before the tyres have warmed through driving and using the vehicle manufacturer's recommendation. Keep that recommendation handy for the load you carry. If one tyre repeatedly loses pressure, have it checked rather than repeatedly topping it up.

Keep the kit usable

Choose a size that fits your storage space and keep the hose and attachments together. Before a trip, check that the unit, cable and connector are ready to use. An inflator is not a puncture repair or a reason to continue on a damaged tyre.
